Spec Sheet Score (0–10): Based only on published specs like protection ratings and features. It doesn't measure sound, comfort, or fit, so it isn't our recommendation. How we calculate the spec sheet score

How We Calculate the Spec Sheet Score

protection counts for three quarters of the score and comfort for one quarter. Protection is scored separately on each published rating, the European SNR (18 dB scores 0, 30 dB or more scores 10, weight 3) and the US NRR (15 dB scores 0, 26 dB or more scores 10, weight 3). The two ratings come from different lab tests, so we never convert one into the other: if a maker publishes only one, that rating alone stands for protection.

Both scales top out at a level that is already plenty for a child at fireworks, concerts or motorsport, so a muff is not rewarded for extra isolation it does not need. Comfort is scored from the published weight, because a lighter muff is easier for a child to keep on (220 g scores 0, 110 g or less scores 10, weight 2). Age range, adjustable band and folding are shown in the table but not scored: nearly every muff here adjusts and folds, and scoring age range would mark baby muffs down for being made for babies.

Any spec the maker does not publish is left out and the remaining weights are rescaled. Scores based on less than 60 percent of the weights, for example one rating and no weight, are marked as limited data. Products marked limited data are listed after the rest.

FactorWeightHow It Scores
Protection (SNR)318 dB scores 0 and 30 dB or more scores 10. Kids' muffs on sale run from about SNR 24 to 31; above about 30 extra attenuation adds little for a child at a typical loud event.
Protection (NRR)315 dB scores 0 and 26 dB or more scores 10. BANZ's ratings guide points parents to NRR 20 to 26 for young children. Scored on its own scale, never converted to or from SNR.
Light Weight (Comfort)2Lower is better. 110 g or less scores 10 and 220 g or more scores 0. A published proxy for comfort on small heads.

Every spec comes from the maker's own product page, spec sheet, or manual. A spec shows as "Not published" when the maker doesn't state it.
