How We Calculate the Spec Sheet Score
protection counts for half of the score and published electronic features for the other half. Protection is scored separately on each published rating: the US NRR (19 dB scores 0, 33 dB or more scores 10, weight 3) and the European SNR (23 dB scores 0, 37 dB scores 10, weight 2). The two ratings come from different lab tests, so we never convert one into the other; if a maker publishes only one, that rating alone stands for protection.
Electronic hear-through earns weight 2 and Bluetooth weight 1. Battery life (weight 1) and response time to a gunshot (weight 1) are scored on a log scale, because the difference between 8 and 25 hours, or 20 ms and 2 ms, matters more than the same number of hours or milliseconds at the top end. Passive muffs have no battery or response time, so those two factors are left out for them rather than counted as zero.
Any other spec the maker does not publish is also left out and the remaining weights are rescaled; scores based on less than 60 percent of the weights are marked as limited data. Price is not part of the score. Products marked limited data are listed after the rest.
| Factor | Weight | How It Scores |
|---|---|---|
| Protection (NRR) | 3 | 19 dB scores 0 and 33 dB or more scores 10. Covers the spread of current shooting muffs and earbuds (about NRR 22 to 34). |
| Protection (SNR) | 2 | 23 dB scores 0 and 37 dB scores 10. Scored on its own scale, never converted to or from NRR. |
| Electronic Hear-Through | 2 | Lets shooters hear range commands without lifting a cup, which is why most expert picks are electronic. |
| Bluetooth | 1 | Calls and music without a cable. |
| Battery Life | 1 | Log scale: 8 h scores 0 and 350 h scores 10, so the step from 8 to 25 hours counts as much as 100 to 350. Not applicable to passive muffs. |
| Response Time | 1 | Log scale, lower is better: 50 ms scores 0 and 0.5 ms scores 10. Not applicable to passive muffs. |
- Tested Score: our own score from a hands-on review. It says "Not yet tested" until we've tested that product.
- Limited Data: the maker publishes under 60% of the specs we score, so the score rests on fewer numbers. These products are listed after the rest.
- Pro Reference: a professional model, far above the others on price, shown for comparison.
- Prices: typical ranges when we checked, not live prices. Amazon's price can differ.

Every spec comes from the maker's own product page, spec sheet, or manual. A spec shows as "Not published" when the maker doesn't state it.
