Spec Sheet Score (0–10): Based only on published specs like protection ratings and features. It doesn't measure sound, comfort, or fit, so it isn't our recommendation. How we calculate the spec sheet score

How We Calculate the Spec Sheet Score

we use only features the makers publish. An XLR output alongside USB counts most (weight 3), because it lets you move the mic to an audio interface later. Bit depth (weight 2) scores 0 for 16-bit, 8 for 24-bit and 10 for 32-bit float.

Sample rate (weight 1) scores 6 for 48 kHz and 10 for 96 kHz or more; we stop rewarding it at 96 kHz because higher rates make no audible difference for speech. A headphone output scores weight 2, a physical gain control 1.5, onboard voice processing 1.5 and a mute control 1 (yes = 10 points, no = 0). Each factor gives 0 to 10 points and the score is the weighted average.

Capsule type and polar patterns are shown but not scored, because the right choice depends on your room and use. We do not score sound quality or price. If a maker does not publish a spec, that factor is left out for that product and the remaining weights are rescaled.

If a product's published specs cover less than 60% of the total weight, its score is marked "limited data" and it is listed after the products with fuller data.

FactorWeightHow It Scores
XLR Output (Future-Proofing)3A hybrid mic can move to an interface or mixer later, so it is not outgrown
Bit Depth224-bit gives the headroom to record at a safe level; 32-bit float adds a little more clip protection
Sample Rate148 kHz is the video and podcast standard; the benefit is capped at 96 kHz because higher rates add nothing audible for speech
Headphone Monitoring2Hearing yourself with no delay is the most-used feature after the capsule
Hardware Gain Control1.5Setting level on the mic is quicker than hunting through OS or app settings
Mute Control1
Onboard Processing1.5Built-in compression, limiting or noise reduction that works in any app

Every spec comes from the maker's own product page, spec sheet, or manual. A spec shows as "Not published" when the maker doesn't state it.
