How to Tune to Drop C
- Drop C is D standard with the low string a further whole step down. From standard tuning, lower every string a whole step: E to D, A to G, D to C, G to F, B to A, and E to D.
- Then lower the low string one more whole step, from D2 to C2.
- Tap a string's button to lock the tuner to it while you tune, then check all six again. Loosening every string changes the pull on the neck, so the first strings may have moved.
Most players use heavier strings for drop C, such as a 10–52 or 11–56 set, so the low string doesn't flop or buzz.
Tune up to each note rather than down to it. If you go past, loosen the string below the note and come back up: the string holds its pitch better that way.
